REMAKING - REmote-working Multiple impacts in the Age of disruptions: socioeconomic transformations, territorial rethinKING, and policy actions
_
The REMAKING project, funded by the Horizon Europe
Programme, aims to study and interpret remote work not only as an
organizational change, but as a true transformative force that deeply impacts
individuals’ lives, business models and socio-economic and territorial
structures. In a context marked by megatrends such as digitalization and the
flexibilization of work, and by recent global shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic
and the war in Ukraine, REMAKING seeks to provide an updated and articulated
overview of the multiple implications of remote work, especially in
medium-sized cities and rural areas across seven European countries (Italy,
Greece, Portugal, Germany, Czech Republic, Ukraine, and Ireland).
The project
focuses on four different models of remote work: “forced” remote workers,
digital nomads, post-pandemic workers and highly qualified workers in high-tech
sectors, with the aim of thoroughly understanding the impacts on three main
social dimensions: the living and working conditions of individuals, employment
arrangements, work-life balance and personal identities; the organizational
reconfiguration of businesses and public institutions, with particular attention
to the phenomenon of platformization; and finally, the socio-economic structure
and local political responses.
Coordinated by the University of Bologna, with a
consortium made up of 12 European partners, REMAKING has a total budget of
almost 3 million euros, of which approximately 95,500 euros are allocated to
the Municipality of Bologna.
The kick-off meeting, held in Bologna in February
2024, represented a key moment to consolidate collaboration among partners,
define research strategies, and initiate a shared path toward the achievement
of the project’s ambitious goals.
REMAKING aims to offer policymakers a
policy-oriented framework that enables a balance between the risks and
opportunities of remote work, facilitating the adoption of innovative and
sustainable territorial strategies and promoting mutual learning among the
various countries and territories involved. In this way, the project
contributes to building an advanced and dynamic understanding of remote work,
fostering the socio-economic development and resilience of the targeted
territories in the era of global transformations and discontinuities.
